Who is Josie and who are we?

We are a family living in northern Michigan with two wonderful Yorkshire Terriers. We love our little dogs dearly. They are a very active part of our lives and bring us so much joy. They go to work with us every day and travel with us whenever possible.  Pepper is a 2 1/2 year old neutered male and Josie is a 1 1/2 year old female.  She weighed 6 lbs 10 oz when we had her bred to Poncho, a 4 lb stud dog owned by Beverly Nieboer.

Wow, have I gotten behind on posting pictures and updates!  Sorry everyone!  I'm starting a massive update, so please bear with me.  We love the puppies dearly and are still looking for loving homes for the boys.  Some updated pictures are on the puppy page.

Josie in labor

WE'VE GOT PUPPIES!  1 girl and 2 boys!  The first one, the little girl, was born at 4:30 PM.  The next puppy, a boy, was born at 5:25.  And the last boy was born at 8:25.  It was so exciting.  Josie worked really hard and did a fantastic job of cleaning the babies up.  The second one was breech and gave us a bit of a scare.  It took a while to deliver him and we had to help pull him out.  But thankfully he is fine and healthy!

And no, Josie didn't pick the spot under the bed to deliver...  Well, maybe she would have.  But since it was the middle of the day, she couldn't slip off in the middle of the night and choose her spot.  We ended up bringing her beloved kennel down to the living room and all of us gathered 'round to support her through it.  It worked out great.  We took the lid off the kennel and only one time did she try to hop out, but we put her back and all went well.  She's the happiest little mama you ever saw.  She's taking good care of her babies.

Here are some pictures of Josie:

9/22/07 Well.  Josie is definitely acting different.  She's quite restless, yet sooo sleepy at the same time.  This morning her temp was 100.1, but I'll try again in a little bit because I took that reading right after she came out from under the covers.  I didn't sleep too good last night because every sound she made I wondered if she was starting to have the puppies.
9/21/07 When we took Josie's temperature this morning it was the normal 100.1 that she's been running.  BUT!  This afternoon and evening we took her temp and it registered 98.7!!!  Is this it?  Could this be the beginning of labor??  She is certainly acting kind of funny and spending quite a bit of time digging around in the blankets in her kennel.  She still doesn't show a lot of fondness for the whelping box we put in the bathroom - she tends to go for her kennel or a spot under the bed.  Yikes!
9/20/07 We went to the vet today to get x-rays and found 3 puppies!  They were the cutest little things!  We saw Josie's tummy, pelvis, and ribs and then within we could plainly see the skulls, spines, rib cages, and legs of three little puppies.  The vet said the pictures were life size, so if that is the case the puppies are about as long as the palm of my hand.  We asked if there could be the possibility of any other puppies hiding in there, and he was pretty sure there wouldn't be.
9/19/07 It's getting hard to wait!  We are now able to put our ear to Josie's tummy and hear the very fast pitter patter of little hearts.  It is so cute!  They move around all over the place in there so we can very plainly see and feel them moving.  Josie's nesting instincts seem to be getting stronger and she is willingly hopping into the nesting box we made her.  She also seems to be favoring a spot under the bed....  I HOPE she doesn't decide to slip out of sight one day and start delivery them under the bed on our cream colored carpet....  I can just see it now....
9/13/07 At 11 days before her due date, we can tell her puppies are really starting to grow.  We've had to change the way we pick Josie up because she is getting so "bottom heavy".  When we hold her in our arms it is very easy to feel her large tummy and what we are sure must be the little puppies dwelling inside.  It worries us some that we could hurt the puppies in some way, so we are being very careful how we hold her these days....
9/1/07

We have 23 days to go and Josie is started getting FAT! I can only imagine how many puppies she has in there!  You can take a look at Josie's weight chart if you'd like.

We are as excited as we can be.  She's still our precious "Little Girl", but now we call her our "Little Mommy Girl".  She'll always be our baby.  It seems the pregnancy has caused her to get even more cuddly and lovey dovey.

8/27/07 4 weeks to go!  We began feeding Josie puppy food.  Her appetite is really picking up.  Her newest game to play is "Keep Pepper Away From My Food".  You should see poor Pepper pathetically begging Josie for just a bite of her food while Josie just stands over it guarding it for all she's worth.  Sometimes, we can tell she doesn't even want to eat it...  But it is MOST important to her that Pepper doesn't eat one bite!  We call her Queen Josephine.
